Record Crowd Participates in 8th Annual Potomac Race
Record crowds turned out on July 4th for the 8th Annual Autism Speaks 5K Run/1 Mile Walk in Potomac Village, Md. Race officials estimate close to 3,000 runners, walkers and spectators were on hand by the start of the 5K at 8 a.m. The morning began with light showers at 6 a.m., which initially dampened the spirits of race directors, Barbara Guterman and Susan Pereles, but by 6:30, the skies cleared, the roads dried and folks began to arrive. Close to 1,400 runners finished the 5K and officials estimate over 1,200 walkers participated in the 1 mile walk, far surpassing expectations in participation and funds raised.
Members of team Evan's Entourage had a great day at the race.
Representative Chris Van Hollen (D - MD), who has been involved with the event for the past six years, thanked the participants and commented on the tremendous growth of the event. Van Hollen also spoke about his support of funding for autism research on the Hill. Topper Shutt, Chief Meteorologist for 9 NEWS NOW, spoke not only about the unexpected beautiful weather, but about his relationship with friends who have a child with autism

Another special guest was the reigning Mrs. Maryland, Siobhan Davenport, who greeted runners at the finish line while waving an American flag.
Race director Susan Pereles had hoped this year's race would raise close to $200,000 but the event appears to have far surpassed her goal. “I'm thrilled because with the donations still coming in, it looks like we will be very close to, if not at, the quarter of a million dollar mark. I think that's huge, especially given the economy. Also, the surge of participation was incredible. Our small community event has come such a long way in eight years.” For more information, about the day or to lend your support through a donation, please visit www.Potomac5K.org.
