A cool, wet autumn day could not dampen the spirits the walkers who took part in the 2nd Annual Southwest Missouri Walk for Autism Research on Oct. 21, raising over $45,000.
This fall, Autism Speaks held 22 Walk for Autism Research events around the nation, raising over $5 million for autism research and bringing out 77,000 participants. The grass-roots fundraising effort, powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, celebrated the hope and promise of autism research from Boston to Chicago, St. Louis to Vermont, North Carolina to Portland, Ore., Dallas to Long Island, N.Y., to name a few.
In all, 22 communities, large and small, mobilized to help fund research, raise awareness, advocate for legislation, and support one another in walk events that began in September on the West Coast and ended just last weekend in Tampa, Fla. (Visit our photo gallery here).
"This is a very exciting time for us," remarked Lisa Gallipoli, national director of field operations for Autism Speaks. "We have seen incredible growth in our event attendance, as well as in the generosity of our donors, thanks to the increase in awareness of autism. This fall we launched new walk events in Burlington, Vt., Fort Wayne, In, Monmouth County, N.J. and Tampa, Fla., and are looking to expand the program further in the coming year." She added, "We're extremely grateful to our volunteers, participants and donors, and to our first-ever national walk sponsor, “The Autism Acceptance Book,” for their support."
In 2007, there are 58 walk events slated for the continental United States, as well as walks in Toronto, Canada and London, England. Please click here to visit our walk site and learn more.
