May Community Events Raise Over $70,000
Community fundraising events continue to be a success, as a concert in Alexandria, Va. and a race/walk in Amherst, Mass. raise more than $70,000 for Autism Speaks.
Autism SpeaksU First Annual “UWere, UAre, USpeak Autism SpeaksU 5K Race/3K Walk”
On May 3, more than 250 University of Massachusetts students and members of the community took to a pondside field on campus to walk and race as part of the first annual “U Were, U Are, U Speak Autism SpeaksU 5K Race/3K Walk” benefiting Autism Speaks. The event was coordinated by Sigma Delta Tau Sorority and Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. The runners and walkers raised over $23,000 for Autism Speaks, making the event the largest student-run philanthropic event on campus. Second Annual National Chamber Players Concert
On Tuesday evening, May 5, the National Chamber Players performed a concert in Alexandria, Va. to benefit Autism Speaks. Master cellist James Lee led a group of performers from the DC-based National Symphony Orchestra in a brilliant performance of Felix Mendelssohn's Octet in E-Flat Major for Strings, Op. 20. This second annual benefit concert, organized by local supporters Nelson and Michele Carbonell, raised $47,000 for Autism Speaks. Students at the

170-year old Episcopal High School, the concert venue, raised additional funds for Autism Speaks earlier through a student vs. faculty basketball game.
All reported fundraising totals are "to-date" - events are still raising money and the sites are still accepting donations. Run for Autism Speaks in the New York and Chicago Marathons


Autism Speaks' Chicago marathon team has 10 positions remaining for those interested in the race on October 11. For the third year, Autism Speaks is honored to be selected to host a team for the ING NYC Marathon on
November 1. Autism Speaks is the only autism charity selected to have a team in the marathon making this the sole opportunity to run the NYC Marathon for the autism community. This year, 125 individuals will train, fundraise, and run for the cause. To date, our elite Autism Speaks runners have raised over $390,000 for Autism Speaks – increasing the pace of autism research with every dollar.
