'Historic' Settlement On Autism Benefits Reached In Washington State

(October 17, 2014) -- Regence Blue Shield, the largest Washington State health insurer, has agreed to settle a pair of class action lawsuits by covering medically necessary autism treatments, including applied behavior analysis (ABA), and establishing a $6 million fund to reimburse policyholders for out-of-pocket expenses incurred as a result of denied claims.

Regence is the last of Washington State's three largest insurers to settle litigation brought under state and federal Mental Health Parity law over lack of coverage for autism treatment.

Premera, LifeWise Agree To Cover Autism Treatment In Washington

(May 19, 2014) -- Premera Blue Cross and LifeWise Health Plan of Washington have agreed to settle three class action lawsuits by covering applied behavior analysis (ABA) as well as speech, occupational and physical therapy for autism. The proposed settlements are the latest victories for a Seattle law firm that has used the state's Mental Health Parity Act in a series of legal actions brought against insurers in Washington and Oregon.

Federal Judge Issues Key Ruling on Mental Health Parity

NEW YORK, NY (June 12, 2012) – – Autism Speaks hailed a federal court ruling that a Washington health plan’s refusal to cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech, occupational, physical and other neurodevelopmental therapies after age six violated the state’s Mental Health Parity Act. The therapies are commonly used to treat the developmentally disabled, including persons with autism.

Autism Speaks Endorses 2011 Washington Autism Insurance Reform Bill

NEW YORK, NY (January 21, 2011) – Autism Speaks, the nation'’s largest autism advocacy organization, today announced its support for Senate Bill 5059, also known as “Shayan'’s Law,” the autism insurance reform bill. The legislation would require private health insurance companies to cover the diagnosis, testing, and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
