WASHINGTON, DC (May 24, 2013) -- Autism Speaks today expressed disappointment with the terms of a one-year ABA pilot program for military families developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) through TRICARE and called on Pentagon leadership to take action.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 16, 2013) -- In its fourth annual survey of military families, Blue Star Families found widespread dissatisfaction among special needs parents in the military with medical, educational and housing services, including access to ABA. Of the 5,125 military families who responded, 19 percent said they were receiving special needs services through the military; of those, 36 percent cited autism as their child's disability.

WASHINGTON, DC (December 5, 2012) -- The U.S. Senate today approved a new Department of Defense budget bill that includes an amendment improving ABA benefits for the 23,000 military families raising children with autism.

WASHINGTON, DC (November 29, 2012) -- The Senate today approved a bipartisan amendment  that would improve access to ABA care for the nation's 23,000 military kids with autism.

Sponsored by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), the vote marked the first Senate vote on the issue and was a critical step forward in getting action completed before the end of the lame duck Congress in January. The vote was announced by Autism Speaks Co-founder Bob Wright before the House Oversight Committee, where he was testifying on the federal response to autism.

WASHINGTON, DC (September 13, 2012) -- Autism Speaks has endorsed a bill sponsored by Rep. Steve Stivers (OH-15) that would require the Department of Defense to review TRICARE policy for the children of military families, including those with special needs.
