Another Federal Court Victory for ABA

CINCINNATI (January 16, 2013) -- A U.S. District Court judge has ordered Ohio to use its federal IDEA funding to provide ABA therapy for a two-year-old boy with autism.

Ruling against the Ohio Department of Health and the Clermont County Board of Developmental Disabilities, U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett rejected the state's argument that it was not required to cover ABA under the federal IDEA Part C program for children under the age of three.

Presidential Forum to Focus on Disability Issues

COLUMBUS, OH (September 11, 2012) -- A coalition of over 50 disability organizations, including Autism Speaks, is hosting a non-partisan September 28 National Forum on Disability Issues where the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates will have the opportunity to present their positions on disability issues and the public will be able to respond through a webcast.

Both the Romney and Obama campaigns have acknowledged the event; the level of their participation will be detailed closer to the event.

  • Requires private health insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder
  • Coverage of treatments will be provided  when prescribed, provided, or ordered for an individual diagnosed with autism by a licensed physician or a licensed psychologist who determines the care to be medically necessary
  • In order to receive coverage, treatment must be provided by or overseen by a liscensed, certified, or registered provider
