Thousands of walkers turned out to Walk Now For Autism Speaks events this weekend! Five locations held Walks Saturday, and one took place Sunday to raise funds and awareness for the Autism Speaks mission.

ALBUQUERQUE (April 5, 2013)-- Governor Susana Martinez signed HB.22, expanding coverage under New Mexico's 2009 autism insurance reform law to include public employees. New Mexico becomes the fourth state to expand its original law to provide more coverage.

SANTA FE (March 18, 2013) -- The New Mexico Senate gave final legislative approval to a bill that would expand the state's 2009 autism insurance reform law to cover state employees. It was approved 34-0 and sent to Gov. Susana Martinez.

March 11, 2013

SANTA FE (March 11, 2013) -- Legislation that would extend coverage under New Mexico's 2009 autism insurance reform law to state employees has been approved unanimously by the Senate Public Affairs Committee. The bill, (HB.22), must next clear the Corporations and Transportation Committee before being called for a final floor vote in the Senate.

1. What does New Mexico’s Autism Insurance Law do?

Broadly speaking, the law:
(1) Requires private health insurers to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder through speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and applied behavioral analysis (ABA) for individuals who are 19 years of age or younger or 22 years of age or younger and enrolled in high school

NEW YORK, NY (April 3, 2009) -- Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, today joined the New Mexico autism community to praise New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson for signing into law Senate Bill 39, which requires insurance companies to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies. The Governor signed the bill yesterday, in honor of World Autism Awareness day, making New Mexico the ninth state in the country to enact comprehensive autism insurance reform.

NEW YORK, NY (March 20, 2009)  -- Autism Speaks today joined New Mexico families and other autism advocacy organizations in applauding the state’s legislators for passing Senate Bill 39, which requires insurance companies to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies.  The bill passed the House today in a vote of 51-15, following unanimous passage in the State Senate, and now heads to Governor Bill Richardson’s desk for signature into law.

Santa Fe, NM (February 9, 2009) -- Today the New Mexico Senate voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill 39, the autism insurance reform bill.  This bill will require private insurance companies to provide coverage of medically necessary, evidence-based autism therapies, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy.  
The bill will now head to the New Mexico State House for review.
