AutisMate Opens the Door to Communication for People with Autism

AutisMate is an iPad app for individuals with autism that improves communication and social and behavioral skills by reinforcing autism treatment through visual supports, including visual scenes, visual schedules, video modeling, visual stories and grid-based AAC. 

CNN Money featured a video online this week about the inspiring story of how Joe, a young man with autism, has used AutisMate to help with communication and various daily living skills.

Apple Launches iOS 7

The new iPhone came out on Friday but even if you didn't line up for a new phone, new Apple software is available for your Mac mobile devices. On September 18, Apple released iOS 7,  the latest version of the operating system which powers iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. Many in the autism community use these and other, similar devices to help with therapies and communication.

Theft Leads Massachusetts Town to Buy Boy with Autism a New iPad

Sarah Cardoso’s son Ryan is 3 ½ and has autism. Over a week ago the Cardoso family son’s iPad was stolen while it was charging in Sarah’s car. Later Sarah took to social media to share her disgust in the incident. 8 days later, their community in Stoughton, Mass., came together to buy her son a brand new iPad. The iPad was delivered to their home by local police department Deputy Chief Robert Devine.

Developers dive in to create a wealth of autism apps

For individuals with autism some new technologies are inhancing their lives through improving communication and enhancing the ability to learn.  For these reasons, parents, therapists, and developers have come together at hackathons to create prototypes of apps to help reach people with autism.

Andy Shih, Senior Vice President for Scientific Affairs at Autism Speaks, has helped organize a "hacking autism" event in San Francisco with cosponsor AT&T Inc. that drew 135 developers.
