At its annual meeting this weekend, the American Psychiatric Association released the long-anticipated fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Clinicians across the United States and much of the world use DSM to diagnose neuro-developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Autism Speaks and the Simons Foundation are establishing and funding a new network to advance autism research through the precious gift of postmortem brain donation. They announced the creation of the Autism BrainNet today at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR).

Ban Soon-taek, spouse of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, delivered a videotaped message to help open the World Autism Awareness Day panel discussion at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Today, the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) sent a unanimously signed letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. It urges her to set minimum federal standards of autism coverage for health plans as part of her department’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
