Father Runs Marathon Blindfolded for Daughter who is Blind and has Autism

(May 5, 2014) -- Mike Bruno, volleyball coach at Point Park Universtiy in Pittsburgh, ran the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday in honor of his 8-year-old daughter Cassie, who has autism and is blind. Mike, who ran the marathon last year as well, announced that he was running this yearduring an Autism Speaks benefit last November. Mike wanted to spread awareness in a special way for this event, which is how he arrived at the idea to run the marathon blindfolded.

Monday night, Joe’s Crab Shack opened its newly constructed doors in Harlem for an exclusive VIP event. Joe’s Crab Shack hosted the vibrant Harlem community and showcased their partnership with Autism Speaks. This past April, Joe’s Crab Shack and their Team Members nationwide ran a campaign for Autism Speaks that garnered over $1M in donations from their customers.

The Autism Speaks to Young Professionals winter gala took place on Monday, February 4 th at Ph-D in the Dream Hotel Downtown. The hotel penthouse provided a fantastic backdrop of the New York City skyline for the crowd of twenty- to forty-somethings who came out in support of Autism Speaks to enjoy a night of cocktails, dancing and hors d’oeuvres. Co-Chairs Jesse Morris and Danny Ryan and close to 200 of their friends and colleagues raised just over $21,000.

Jason McElwain, autistic basketball sensation, finishes Rochester Marathon and qualifies for Boston Marathon

James McElwain, who hails from Rochester, New York put himself on the map after an amazing high school basketball game. He scored 20 points in only four minutes.

His latest athletic endeavor was the Rochester marathon where he finished 15th with a time of 3 hours, 1 minute and 41 seconds.

With this time, McElwain has qualified for the Boston Marathon, which he hopes to run in 2014.

The 3rd Annual Autism Speaks at Baltusrol a Huge Success

The 3rd Annual Autism Speaks at Baltusrol was held Monday, September 24, 2012 in Springfield Twp, N.J. The weather was beautiful and perfect for a day on the golf course. 114 golfers gathered to play the famed lower course and raise funds for Autism Speaks. Over 130 guests joined us on the terrace of the club for the evening program, which was highlighted by a poignant story from Zachary Brooks, brother to a boy with autism.

In a room filled with laughter, drinks, delicious hors d'oeuvres and rocking music, Autism Speaks celebrated the fourth annual Autism Speaks to Young Professionals (AS2YP) summer gala on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street.  Over 1,000 people turned out for a night of fun in the city to encourage young professionals from all industries to learn about autism, while raising funds in a unique way. The event was co-chaired by Jesse Morris and Danny Ryan and raised over $90,000 dollars for Autism Speaks’ research and advocacy initiatives.
