WASHINGTON, DC (June 27, 2013) -- Military families will face new restrictions and cutbacks obtaining applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for their children with autism under new policies made public this week by TRICARE, the Department of Defense health benefits program.

PARAMUS, NJ (July 15, 2013) -- Autism Speaks today commended U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) for introducing the AGE-IN Act which would address the challenges faced by young adults with autism as they "age out" of  public education and other support services. Menendez announced the bill here at the ECLC of New Jersey's Bergen P.R.I.D.E. Center.

WASHINGTON, DC (June 14, 2013) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has approved an amendment to the new defense bill that would require the Pentagon to cover ABA care for all military families raising children with developmental disabilities, including autism, at medically prescribed levels.

The bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was sponsored by Reps. John Larson (D-CT) and Tom Rooney (R-FL) and approved by voice vote. Although the full NDAA still requires House approval, passage of the ABA amendment was the critical step.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 24, 2013) -- Autism Speaks today expressed disappointment with the terms of a one-year ABA pilot program for military families developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) through TRICARE and called on Pentagon leadership to take action.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 16, 2013) -- In its fourth annual survey of military families, Blue Star Families found widespread dissatisfaction among special needs parents in the military with medical, educational and housing services, including access to ABA. Of the 5,125 military families who responded, 19 percent said they were receiving special needs services through the military; of those, 36 percent cited autism as their child's disability.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 6, 2013) -- The agency in charge of managing health benefits for the nation's 8.2 million federal employees, retirees and dependents is urging its participating health plans to start covering ABA in 2014 or explain why they are refusing coverage.

BATON ROUGE (April 26, 2013) -- The Louisiana Legislature has adopted a concurrent resolution calling on Congress to pass the Achieving A Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act  to help individuals with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum, to save for their future needs. Sponsored by Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) and Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), the bipartisan measure has now attracted 140 sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 30 in the Senate.
