Autism Speaks is concerned that planned revisions to the definition of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may restrict diagnoses in ways that may deny vital medical treatments and social services to some people on the autism spectrum. These revisions concern the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), scheduled for publication in spring 2013.

In their first year of life, babies who later develop autism tend to show unusual brain responses when watching a moving image of a face that looks toward or away from them. This new finding suggests that direct measures of brain activity in infants as young as six months may help predict the later development of autism.

NAAR funding for pilot studies at the Child Study Center at Yale University School of Medicine played a key role in the recent award of a five year, multi-million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to the center as part of the STAART (Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment) program to establish Centers of Excellence in autism research throughout the country.

Four Communities Raise Awareness and Dollars with Walk F.A.R. for NAAR

What a weekend! Thousands of people in four different communities hit the streets to take part in Walk F.A.R. for NAAR– our signature fundraising and awareness effort. Last weekend's walks included Pittsburgh, as well as inaugural walks in New York City, Baltimore and Portland. All together, these four events raised more than $980,000 in this one weekend.

NAAR Schedules Inaugural Toronto Walk

NAAR-Canada is proud to announce the first Canadian Walk F.A.R. for NAAR event which will take place in Spring 2005, in Toronto. Walk F.A.R. for NAAR is just five years old and already we are crossing the border into Canada.
