New CDC Prevalence Study for Greater Atlanta Area

Results Published in Journal of the American Medical Association Show Increased Prevalence for Autism in Greater Atlanta

The following information was sent to NAAR from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an informational update on their autism prevalence study focusing on the greater Atlanta Metropolitan area. The results from this study are published in the Jan. 1, 2003 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The current prevalence of autism in the United States (US) is unknown because few epidemiologic studies have been conducted.

In a column published Nov. 30, Wall Street Journal 'Numbers Guy' Carl Bialik examines the one-in-166 autism prevalence number cited by autism organizations. His conclusion: "Stripped of spin and taken in context, the one-in-166 estimate does appear to be sound, if overly simplified." Click here to read the article.

CDC Child Development Campaign Expands to Target More Than 400,000 Child Care Facilities Nationwide

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with a coalition of national partners, is launching a new phase of the "Learn the Signs. Act Early" public awareness campaign. This childhood development campaign is designed to help increase awareness about the importance of tracking a child's social and emotional development, including the potential early warning signs of autism and other developmental disabilities.

Two New CDC Autism Prevalence Studies Confirm Upper End of Prevalence Range

August 20, 2007


The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta released the results of two new autism prevalence studies on May 4, 2006. The first, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) reports the prevalence of autism as 5.7 per thousand among children aged 4-17. The second, the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) pegs prevalence at 5.5 per thousand among children 4-17. The data were collected from parental surveys in 2003-2004. CDC reports a range of prevalence (2-6 per thousand) based on data from approximately 20 studies.
