Autism Speaks Co-founders Suzanne and Bob Wright and Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, spouse of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, hosted the Sixth Annual World Focus on Autism on Thursday, September 26 in New York City. The event promoted autism awareness and highlighted autism as a global public health issue for an audience of First Spouses and dignitaries from countries around the world.

She’s such a hard act to follow! If passion could move mountains- Suzanne would have changed the landscape already…. Thank you all for coming out this evening. In all of my 44-years in law and business, I’ve realized this is what it’s about. Look around the room. Smart, caring people getting together to get it done. For the right reasons. For the right population. Hhhm. I guess I have the “Wright” name. (pause) It comes down to Integrity- doing the right thing – always.

Deana Petty and her husband, Doug, are like most grandparents: They dote endlessly on the kids by celebrating their personal milestones and call them, 'the sunshine in their lives, the apples of their eyes, the joy in their hearts.'

When her grandson Mac was diagnosed with autism five years ago at the age of 7, Petty gathered her family in close.

“I heard a doctor say if you meet one autistic child, you’ve met one autistic child,” said Petty. “Translation: there is no template.”

Drive. Determination. Single-minded focus. These are qualities you’d expect to see on the golf course. But today at the famed USGA Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck, N.Y., those words took on extra meaning during the 15th Annual Autism Speaks Celebrity Golf Challenge.

Retired UConn head coach Jim Calhoun told a crowd of more than 220 golfers how he balked at NCAA rules – and wore his Autism Speaks blue puzzle pin everywhere he went. “I wear it or I don’t coach,” said the Autism Speaks ambassador and autism grandpa.

In one word, Autism Speaks Co-Founder Bob Wright taught 9th graders today -- his key to changing the world of autism and business. "Empathy." 

The 9th Grade graduating class of the Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield, Connecticut listened intently Tuesday morning as he told them to never lose sight of those around them and how their work affects the world. He said -- it's about people. His words hung in the air above the traditional conference table the boys gather at each day.

On Thursday, May 30th, the Katie Show spotlighted living with autism in an episode titled, ‘Living With Autism & Amazing Acts of Love.’ Katie kicked off the show sharing that the broadcast was long overdue, considering 1 in 88 children are now diagnosed with some form of autism. Several people who work on the Katie Show are affected, including Katie’s godson Jay, who was diagnosed with autism ten years ago.
