Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network

New strategic plan emphasizes research and community outreach at 14 centers across North America; includes two new centers

In the newest round of funding for its Autism Treatment Network, Autism Speaks has selected 14 sites across U.S. and Canada. The selections include two new centers that will join the network in September 2014. (Full list below.)

Pica, the repeated eating of non-food items, is the eating disorder most often displayed by children with autism. In published literature, the most common definition of pica is the placing of non-edible items past the plane of the lips. For example, a child may eat food from a garbage can or bite off a piece of a toy plastic car and swallow it quickly.

In today’s issue of Pediatrics, researchers report stark racial differences in the likelihood that children with autism receive specialty care for related medical conditions. Autism is commonly associated with a range of health conditions such as GI disorders, sleep disturbance and epilepsy.
