Study links higher risk to lack of sexual knowledge; Autism Speaks has resources for building understanding and skills

Adults with autism report starkly higher rates of sexual victimization than do other adults, and the risk appears to rise with lack of sexual knowledge, according to a new report.

(August 19, 2014) -- Tragic stories involving the abuse of individuals with autism continue to appear on the news across the country, a few of which occurred in recent weeks.

Florida - The case of Aaron Hill has garnered national attention in recent days. Two adults were arrested in Okeechobee, Florida after a video surfaced showing Hill being attacked at a party while several people stood around and did nothing to stop the abuse.

(July 29, 2014) - An article in the Washington Post this past week discussed the lack of services and opportunities currently available to adults with autism. The article quotes Autism Speaks Executive Vice President Lisa Goring. “There are not enough services. It’s a real problem for families.”

(July 23, 2014) - Business Insider recently profiled 35-year-old Mark Leslie. Mark is a computer programer in New York City who has an Asperger Syndrome diagnosis. Like many adults on the autism spectrum, Mark has battled social anxiety which made it difficult for him to find a job. That is until he applied at ULTRA testing.
