Poverty For Americans With Disabilities Rises, Now Double U.S. Rate

WASHINGTON, DC (September 18, 2014) -- As unemployment and poverty decline across the nation, both indicators for Americans with disabilities are now double the national average and poverty is on the rise, a Senate committee reported today. The release of the U.S. Census Bureau statistics prompted renewed calls on Congress to pass the ABLE Act to dramatically increase the private resources available for adults with disabilities to pay for their housing, medical, transportation and other needs.

Student With Autism Gains Legal Win To Use Service Dog

(June 26, 2014) -- A New Jersey school district that barred a student with autism from bringing his service dog to classes and after-school activities has agreed to reverse its policy under a settlement reached with the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ). The school's ban was found to be in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Harkin Unveils 4-Point Jobs Plan For 'ADA Generation'

WASHINGTON, DC (September 26, 2013) -- U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today issued a four-point plan to create 250,000 new job opportunities for the "ADA Generation," young adults with disabilities aged 16 to 19, by 2015. Harkin called for eliminating a Social Security requirement that people with disabilities forgo work in order to qualify for benefits.
