SAN DIEGO (December 11, 2013) -- Qualcomm, a wireless technology services firm, will introduce coverage for applied behavior analysis (ABA) for autism in its employee health plan in 2014. (The Qualcomm announcement came as Toyota was sued in federal court by an employee for denying his claims for ABA benefits for his three children who have autism.)

WASHINGTON, DC (December 13, 2013) -- An 11th-hour agreement on a new Defense bill hammered out by the Senate and the House dropped dozens of proposed amendments, including a provision to improve TRICARE coverage for ABA treatment for military dependents with developmental disabilities, including autism.

MIAMI (November 10, 2013) -- A federal judge has ordered Florida's Medicaid program to immediately cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) for children with autism "to prevent irreversible harm to these children’s health and development." The Autism Speaks Legal Resource Center filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case on behalf of the children.

NEW YORK (November 7, 2013) -- American Express has announced it will voluntarily introduce coverage for autism-related treatments, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), in its 2014 employee health benefits plan. The announcement makes American Express the latest major employer that self-funds its health insurance plan to voluntarily offer autism benefits.

WASHINGTON, DC (November 8, 2013) -- More insurance carriers participating in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB) will provide autism benefits in 2014, including the first carrier serving most of northern Virginia. However, many gaps in coverage remain in the FEHB program which is the nation's largest employer-sponsored health benefits program, covering 8.2 million federal employees, retirees and dependents.

SACRAMENTO (October 10, 2013) -- California's 2011 autism insurance law, which was scheduled to expire next summer, has been extended through 2016 under legislation signed yesterday by Gov. Jerry Brown. Brown also signed some bills and vetoed others in a package of diversity legislation designed to improve autism services for the state's disadvantaged communities.

WASHINGTON, DC (October 5, 2013) -- Autism Speaks has joined the American Academy of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital Association, Easter Seals and other major advocacy groups in their appeal for TRICARE to overhaul its pediatric care for military kids, including the delivery of applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy.
