WASHINGTON, DC (April 2, 2014) -- President Barack Obama today issued a White House proclamation recognizing World Autism Awareness Day, noting that Americans with autism are "an essential thread in the diverse tapestry of our Nation."

Obama cited the Affordable Care Act which prevents insurers from denying coverage to people because they have autism and requires preventive childhood screenings to detect autism at no out-of-pocket cost to parents.

States across the country Light It Up Blue

Washington, D.C. (April 2, 2014) – In conjunction with World Autism Awareness Day, Autism Speaks launched its fifth annual Light It Up Blue campaign today, turning iconic landmarks, state capitals and homes across the country blue for the month of April.  Beginning with the Empire State Building this afternoon, the Light It Up Blue campaign will call worldwide attention for greater autism awareness.

This past November, First Jewelry brand, Persona, and Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, partnered  on a bead design contest to find new design ideas for the Persona Autism Speaks collection.  Persona first introduced a collection of three Autism Speaks beads in the fall of 2012 in partnership with Zales.  Together, Zales and Persona contributed $10 from the sale of each special collection bead to Autism Speaks with over $130,000 in donations made to date.

April 1, 2014 - Autism Speaks President Liz Feld appeared on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" today to discuss  the CDC's new autism prevalence estimate of 1 in 68, and to emphasize the need or a comprehensive national response to autism’s rising numbers.

Feld told host Pedro Echevarria, "We have got to develop a national strategy to address the needs of the autism community across the lifespan."

(April 1, 2014) -  Today the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the U.N., Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and Autism Speaks co-hosted a panel discussion, "Autism: Awareness to Action," at the United Nations in New York. The discussion was co-sponsored by the United States Mission to the U.N., Permanent Mission of India to the U.N, Permanent Mission of Chile to the U.N and Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the U.N.
