One of the major goals of Autism Speaks (AS) is to speed up scientific research - we don't want to wait a day longer than we have to make the critical connection that will lead scientists to that "a ha!" moment.
With this in mind, beyond funding individual research projects, another major activity of the AS Science Program is to promote scientific meetings. They provide a venue for the exchange of ideas and collaborative thought between researchers. Such meetings energize research efforts by encouraging sharing, expanding the research community, and ensuring that scientists regularly improve upon their knowledge of autism.
AS involvement in meetings may occur in one of three ways. The meetings may be proactive initiatives conceived of and organized by AS to address a question under investigation by one of the AS science portfolios (AS-Organized Events). Other meetings may be organized by outside scientists who have requested and received funding from AS to support their meetings (AS-Sponsored Events), and still others are large annual conventions for scientists around the world to showcase their data relevant to autism (International Research Conferences).
