In 2007 the American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (AJBB) issued a specific request for articles to be published in a special volume dedicated to the role of oxidative stress in autism. The results of the request were released this month, as a special issue of AJBB containing 16 articles entirely focusing on this hot topic in autism.
Included in this special issue are papers which detail the following:
  1. Whether markers of oxidative stress are present in tissues from individuals with autism
  2. The mechanisms by which changes in markers of oxidative stress may occur in human tissues, including metabolic and immune markers
  3. The investigation of possible genetic clues which may contribute to expression of markers for oxidative stress
  4. The utility of animal models to study this question

Many of the studies selected for publication were funded by Autism Speaks, or utilize research resources only available through programs such as the Autism Tissue Program to examine markers of oxidative stress in brain tissue. The collection of publications provides an important contribution to the body of literature on oxidative stress in autism spectrum disorders, and we thank the AJBB for making the articles available to the public on their web site.

View the articles on the AJBB site.

A list of guest editorial board members, plus a summary of the issue written by guest volume editor Dr. Abha Chauhan at the Institute of Basic Research in New York, will be posted at the above AJBB link soon.
