The autism field has suffered from a lack of good model systems that can be used to research how genetic susceptibility interacts with specific environmental factors. To encourage new thinking in the field, in October 2008 Autism Speaks sponsored a research symposium discussing how model systems may be used to study environmental toxicants. The proceedings of that meeting, authored by the speakers of the symposium, have just been released as a publication in the journal Neurotoxicology.
