Request for Applications Announced:
Fostering the Progress of
the Autism Treatment Network
As the Autism Treatment Network (ATN) enters the final year of its first grant cycle, Autism Speaks announces the planned release of a Request for Applications (RFA) for its next round of funding. The ATN is a collaboration of treatment
and research centers dedicated to improving medical care for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) by providing and expanding access to state-of-the-art comprehensive and coordinated medical care for children with ASD.
The RFA, which will be open to both new and existing ATN sites, will first solicit letters of intent from hospitals and academic medical centers interested in participating in the ATN's multi-site clinical care and research network. Standout applicants will be invited to submit a full application.
This second funding cycle is intended to further advance the ATN's efforts to develop clinical practice guidelines, tools, and evidence supporting effective diagnostic and treatment practices for ASD and associated conditions including gastrointestinal and sleep disorders. All participating sites will therefore be active in the ATN's guideline development, clinical research, and patient registry activities.
Applicants will represent institutions with an established autism program that provides comprehensive and on-going multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with ASD, and will need to meet stringent requirements. These include having the right mix of qualifications and experience, the ability to assemble an effective and dedicated multidisciplinary team of clinicians and administrators, and the capacity to gain active and continuing support from their respective parent institutions for participation in the network. In addition, successful sites must be willing to integrate the ATN's assessment battery into their standard clinical practices, enroll a specified number of children into the ATN data registry and follow up on their care.
The RFA will be released on February 22, 2010. Stages in the selection process will extend throughout the year, with the successful sites being announced in December, 2010 in anticipation of a January 2011 start.
