Autism Speaks Science Ambassador Program

Science AmbassadorsOverview
The Autism Speaks Science Ambassador program was conceived to help educate the community about Autism Speaks' science programs in order to advance their understanding, participation and support of our efforts to progress autism research. Ambassadors will work with the science and field staff at Autism Speaks, their local researchers and members of the community to increase public awareness of current events in science, ongoing clinical trials and Autism Speaks' funded research.

Program Oversight
Oversight of the program involves collaboration between Autism Speaks Science and Field staff. The local Autism Speaks Field Staff will manage the selection of new Science Ambassadors and the coordination of all local Science Ambassador Activities. The Autism Speaks Science staff will make final approval of the proposed candidate, provide continuing educational development with regards to autism science, provide updates to the training materials and manage the Science Ambassadors through our on-line social networking webpage (NING) and direct communication.

Autism Speaks Science
Autism Speaks is dedicated to facilitating global research into the causes, treatments and an eventual cure for autism by:

  • Promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • Funding research
  • Organizing research summit meetings
  • Establishing standards for data collection and management to benefit the scientific community

In any disease or disorder, there are four basic questions that can be investigated to improve its understanding: What causes it? (Etiology); What is it? (Biology); How do you know if someone has it? (Diagnosis); and most importantly, How do we make it better? (Treatment).

Autism demands answers for each of these questions. All are priorities. Autism Speaks has garnered its resources and organized its research program to pursue each of these avenues simultaneously.
