Research We Have Funded
Winter 2009 – Autism Speaks has announced a new High Risk, High Impact grant to investigate the cognition of non-verbal individuals with autism, especially those who have learned to type. In the tradition of High Risk, High Impact awards, this grant to John Connolly, Ph.D., of McMaster University supports a unique and innovative study that offers a new way to evaluate the level of language understanding in non-verbal individuals. The award is for $72,166 for a one year proof of principle study. For more information on this award, please see the abstract and a related news piece, here.

October 2009 – Autism Speaks has announced the first class of Dennis Weatherstone Pre-Doctoral Fellows. Made possible by a multi-year grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and named in honor of its former Chairman of the Board, Sir Dennis Weatherstone, eight fellowship projects were selected for funding by Autism Speaks with awards totaling $448,000 over the next two years. The fellowship awards will provide highly qualified candidates with exceptional research training opportunities in all areas related to the study of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Publications

In addition to leveraging their AS/CAN/NAAR-funded studies to earn larger autism research grants from the National Institutes of Health and other sources, researchers funded by AS/CAN/NAAR have experienced significant success publishing their studies in numerous scientific journals and books. These publications play a key role in enhancing the scientific community's understanding of autism spectrum disorders and elevating the caliber of the science.

Autism Speaks is proud to present this partial list of articles that have resulted from AS/CAN/NAAR-funded research from 1996 to 2007. The funded researchers are listed in bold.
