Autism Speaks funded 61 new biomedical research projects at a total value of approximately $10 million in December 2006. The awards covered a broad spectrum of autism sciences, including cognitive/motor processing, diagnosis, epidemiology, genetics, language and communication, neurobiology, neuroimaging, immunology, neuropathology and treatment.

Three categories of grants were funded:

  • The “Autism Speaks Mentor-based Fellowship Awards in Autism Research" category was allocated $2,996,000 to support 43 training programs (click here for more)
  • The “Augmentation and Bridge Awards" category was allocated $897,572 in total to support 11 projects (click here for more)
  • The “Awards in Response to the Early Treatment & Intervention RFA" category was allocated $6,103,057 to support 7 projects (click here for more)
All grant applications were reviewed and approved by the Autism Speaks Scientific Advisory Board together with a group of panel reviewers. Final recommendations were presented to and approved by the Autism Speaks Board of Directors on Dec. 7, 2006.
