Autism Speaks Website Receives a Platinum Award at the E-Healthcare Leadership Awards
NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 18, 2008) – The Autism Speaks website – www.autismspeaks.org -- received the highest level prize, the Platinum award, in the “Best Health Content: Consumer Disease Focused Site” category during a special presentation at theTwelfth Annual Healthcare Internet Conference held November 10-12 in Orlando. The E-Healthcare Leadership awards recognize the best web sites of healthcare providers, health plans, healthcare associations, online health companies, pharmaceutical/medical companies, and other healthcare organizations.

The Autism Speaks website offers comprehensive, easy-to-navigate resources for those directly affected by autism, as well as compelling information to increase awareness about autism among the general population. Kevin Berk is Director of Interactive Services for Autism Speaks and Andrew Leonard is Manager of Web Content. The Autism Speaks website was designed by Managing Director Ross Cooper and Executive Creative Director Angela Vecchio of Gold N Fish Marketing of Armonk, NY.

“We have worked hard since our founding to make our web site informative, timely, easy-to-navigate and highly searchable, and it is wonderful to receive this recognition from the E-Healthcare Leadership Awards,” said Alison Singer, Autism Speaks' Executive Vice President of Communication and Awareness. “But equally if not more wonderful are the calls and emails we get every day from families who tell us the site helped them learn the signs of autism, better understand their child's educational rights or navigate the maze of adult services.”

More than 1,100 entries were received from a wide range of healthcare organizations for the 2008 E-Healthcare Leadership Awards program. Websites were rated based on a standard of internet excellence and also based on how they compared with others in their group classification.

About Autism
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The prevalence of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

About Autism Speaks
Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Bob Wright is Senior Advisor at Lee Equity Partners and served as vice chairman, General Electric, and chief executive officer of NBC and NBC Universal for more than twenty years. Autism Speaks merged with both the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) and Cure Autism Now (CAN), bringing together the nation's three leading autism advocacy organizations.
