Statement from President Liz Feld

Over the past six days, the autism community has joined the millions of people across the country and around the world who mourn the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. Among those killed were two remarkable special education teachers, as well as innocent children with special needs.

As child advocates, we appeal to members of Congress and the President to reinstate the ban on assault weapons and enact other meaningful legislation to help keep powerful weapons out of the wrong hands.

People who live with autism spectrum disorders are among the most vulnerable in our society. And the people who dedicate their lives to improving the lives of those with special needs hold a special place for us.

It is the responsibility of our elected leaders to honor these victims' memories and their legacies by ensuring that we never see another day like we did last week.
