June 7, 2013
On Friday, June 7, more than a hundred cyclists kicked-off the Bike to the Beach NY event in Battery Park City and will trek 100 miles to Westhampton Beach, N.Y., to raise autism awareness and funds for Autism Speaks and families affected by autism. This is the fourth year of Bike to the Beach NY, with additional events in DC and in New England. Bike to the Beach (B2B) is a vibrant, fun, energetic community whose passion for cycling is coupled with fundraising and raising awareness of autism, the developmental disorder that affects 1 in every 88 children in the United States.
Autism Speaks is the main benefiting charity of Bike To The Beach, and has incorporated the events into our endurance program, Team Up with Autism Speaks. Since 2007, B2B’s annual century-rides have raised over $1,100,000 for our cause. B2B has also empowered over 2,000 participants and volunteers to join the B2B team and become actively engaged in their communities.
The New York ride started at 4:30 a.m. Highlights included riding through the streets of Manhattan and over the Williamsburg bridge in the pre-dawn hours, arriving at the first rest stop on the oceanfront promenade in Rockaway Beach as the sun rises over the Atlantic, and, of course, crossing the finish line at the Dune Deck Hotel, where a crisp dip in the ocean and great post-ride festivities await!
Bike to the Beach for Autism is a 501(c)3 non-profit that promotes bicycle riding as the best way to commute, stay active, have fun, and travel. Autism Speaks is proud to have B2B as a partner in our communities.
