Autism Speaks Creates "Speak Out Award"
Autism Speaks has created a new award to honor those who go above and beyond in promoting the organization through the media. The “Speak Out Award” was created by Autism Speaks Co-founders Suzanne and Bob Wright to recognize great achievement in raising awareness of autism and of families living with autism. Award recipients receive a personalized award and the Wrights will make a personal donation of $1000 to the Autism Speaks mission area of the recipient's choice.

The first winner of the “Speak Out Award” was Steve Ruggles of North Carolina. Ruggles appeared on the CBS Morning Show in June for a makeover segment after his wife, Shelby, submitted his name for consideration. During the segment, Ruggles, the father of a child with autism, not only wore his puzzle piece pin, but he took the time to talk about autism and Autism Speaks. View the segment here.
Peter Bell, Autism Speaks executive vice president of programs & services, presented the award to Steve and Shelby at the Charlotte Walk Now for Autism Speaks kick-off in August. A surprised and emotional Ruggles said “I've won a lot of awards in my life, but this one has the most meaning to me. Please let the Wrights know how much we appreciate this.”

Autism Speaks is proud to honor Steve and his family for all the work they do on behalf of their community and Autism Speaks. The Wrights will make a $1000 donation to the Ruggles' Walk Now for Autism Speaks team – Ryan's Race.

If you know someone deserving of a “Speak Out Award,” please send the name and information to media@autismspeaks.org.
