In Memoriam: Paul Newman

All of us at Autism Speaks mourn the passing of Paul Newman, a legend of movie and theater as well as icon in the world of philanthropy.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Joanne Woodward, their children and families.

A statement from Bob and Suzanne Wright, co-founders of Autism Speaks

We are profoundly saddened at the news of Paul's passing. He was a great friend and a tremendous force in the community.

We partnered with Paul and Joanne on the restoration of the Westport Country Playhouse several years ago. Then after we founded Autism Speaks, Paul and Joanne generously co-chaired an autism fundraiser at the playhouse. But their philanthropic efforts went so much farther than just their community.

Paul was a legend in his own time on stage and in the charitable community. He set the standards by which other organizations judge themselves. He was a great man and a great friend who will live on in the memories of people everywhere. We will truly miss him.
