The conference's impressive opening session featured live entertainment, national HOSA speakers, recognition of sponsorship recipients, and a speech by Acting Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Robert C. Williams. Rear Admiral Williams spoke to the assembly about the past, present, and future of HOSA's service to the community. When Williams mentioned Autism Speaks, the assembly broke out in spontaneous applause.
Autism Speaks participated in the HOSA Healthcare Exposition, which featured over 40 healthcare and non profit professionals. Volunteers from Kohl's A Team helped staff the booth and answer questions for students, advisors and parents. It was exciting to hear the stories from those chapters already involved in the National Service Project, as well as to help those who wanted to get activities started in their community.
Shawna Weinhiemer and Kathy Streng presented two Educational Symposiums on June 24 and 25 on current events at Autism Speaks and suggested fundraising and awareness ideas. To view the slides from the presentation, visit the downloads section of www.autismspeaks.org/studentclubs.
This year marks the third year for HOSA's partnership with Autism Speaks as its national service project. Kathy Streng recognized the chapters that had contributed funds to Autism Speaks thanked them for raising a total of $105,490 nationwide for Autism Speaks!
The top state financial contributor, raising $9,586, was North Carolina HOSA.
The largest single chapter contribution of $3,817 was from David W. Butler High School in Matthews, N.C.
We sincerely thank the 107,000 HOSA members for their continued commitment to Autism Speaks. Every day they make a difference in the lives of individuals and families living with autism.
