Greece Joins International Autism Awareness Efforts

Autism awareness and global collaboration were among the list of topics at the "Learning Differences: Daring to Dream" conference held at the American Community School in Athens, Greece on May 9 and 10. Sheila Sullivan, Autism Speaks Assistant Director of Creative Services, addressed parents, professionals and educators from around the world about

building awareness of autism spectrum disorders and creating a caring community for individuals with autism. Attendees were encouraged to form coalitions and collaborations to educate the scientific, health, educational and governmental entities in Greece about the need for services, research and advocacy for individuals with autism. ERT, one of Greece's leading television stations, covered the conference, and interviewed Sullivan, who discussed the need for a worldwide autism awareness movement and the hope that Autism Speaks can help to facilitate that movement. Currently, a group of parents, pediatricians, therapists and educators, have formed a committee to address the need for autism awareness and advocacy efforts in Greece.
