Suzanne Wright Honored for Volunteer Work
It was a busy week for Suzanne Wright, Autism Speaks co-founder (shown above, right, with football great Doug Flutie and his wife Laurie). First, on May 1, Wright was in Waltham, Mass., to address the Autism Update 2006 gathering sponsored by The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism and Children Making Strides. She discussed her experiences as a grandmother, fundraiser and advocate for those with autism.
On May 4, Wright was in New York to receive the Luella Bennack Volunteer Award as part of the Fifth Annual Women Who Care Luncheon sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy of New York City. Suzanne's daughter, Katie Wright, whose autistic son was the influence behind the creation of Autism Speaks, presented the award to her mother.
Among the other honorees and presenters on hand were Susan Lucci, Regis Philbin, Danny Glover, Sheila Johnson, Tim Gunn of Project Runway, as well as actor-comedian Tom Arnold, President of Lifetime Television Betty Cohen and Miss USA Tara Conner. All proceeds from Women Who Care, UCP/NYC's signature event, go to support its extensive network of more than 80 individual programs serving over 13,000 children and adults with disabilities and their families.
