Volunteer Defies Heat; Raises $100,000 in Marathon Run!
Brian Callaci, Chicago-area resident and Autism Speaks supporter, thought he might raise about $15,000 when he asked friends, family members, and business colleagues to make a donation to Autism Speaks in honor of his running in the Chicago Marathon on October 7th. As an investment banker, Brian typically has a pretty good financial sense, but he considerably underestimated his potential to raise money. Instead of $15,000, he has raised a total of $100,000.

Over two hundred-fifty individuals contributed. Brian and his wife, Carol, are the parents of three children, one of whom, Jack (age 7), is on the spectrum. As part of this effort, the Callaci family has made a major financial commitment to Autism Speaks – even Michael (age 11) and Katie (age 10) pledged money to their father's effort!
On what proved to be a record day of heat and humidity for Chicago, Brian completed his first-ever 26.2 mile marathon. Hundreds required medical attention and roughly one-fourth of the field of 45,000 registered runners were halted while still on the course as race officials cancelled the event midway through. 10,000 runners did not even attend because of the heat.
