Autism Speaks Grantee Profiled on ABC
On Dec. 10, ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson" series"Spirit of America" traveled to Tucson, Ariz. to spotlight a powerful new program that's helping young adults living with autism. ABC News Correspondent John Donvan reported from the University of Arizona where students with autism are learning some of life's most essential lessons. The University's Chapel Haven West program, which received an Autism Speaks Family Services Grant in 2007, is teaching "Life 101," with topics ranging from how to make change to how to change a light bulb. The students are also working on the subtler things that make autism so difficult – like interacting with others. It's all designed to help the participants achieve greater independence – and fulfillment – in their adult lives.
