On October 29 Autism Speaks hosted the first annual Dennis Weatherstone Memorial Fellowship Luncheon. The event introduced the first class of Weatherstone Fellows: eight young scientists selected through a highly competitive process to receive two-year research grants to complete projects under the supervision of leading scientists in the field of autism research.

Funded with a major grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, this program is designed to accelerate the pace of research and to attract the most promising young talent in bio-medical science to the field of autism. The program is a tribute to Sir Dennis Weatherstone, who served as the first chairman of the Niarchos Foundation and who was a former chairman and CEO of J.P. Morgan. Sir Dennis passed away in 2008.

Attending the luncheon with the Fellows were Autism Speaks' co-founders, Bob and Suzanne Wright; Lady Marion Weatherstone; Andreas Dracopoulos, Co-President and Board Member of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation; Fred Schnur, President of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation; Peter Emch, supporter of Autism Speaks; Mark Roithmayr, President of Autism Speaks; Jeffrey Brinck, Board Member of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
