Autism Speaks Puts Spotlight on the Needs of Adults with Autism
|
|
|
April is Autism Awareness Month and because of the growing concern families have for the futures of their loved ones with autism, Autism Speaks is shining a spotlight on adults with autism. We are proud to announce two new programs launched this week that will address the needs of this very important and underserved segment of the autism population. Additional information about other resources available to the adult autism community is found below. And for the first time, Saturday, April 18 has been designated
Adult Autism Awareness Day.

Ad Council and Autism Speaks Launch New PSAs Starring Pro Golfer Ernie Els
|
|
|
Autism Speaks and the Ad Council recently launched new public service announcements (PSAs) starring professional golfer Ernie Els and his son Ben. The PSAs juxtapose the odds of Els' successful career, including winning the U.S. Open twice, with the startling odds of having a child diagnosed with autism, and urge parents to learn the early warning signs of the disorder at

Autism Speaks Announces Collaboration with the National Children's Study
|
|
|
Autism Speaks announces it will be advancing the study of genetic and environmental contributions to the risk of autism by collaborating with the National Children's Study (NCS), one of the richest research resources to ever study children's health. It aims to recruit 100,000 pregnant women from across the U.S. to follow those children through adulthood. "This is a truly unique opportunity to prospectively follow a large cohort of children in order to understand the environmental and genetic risk factors that are related to autism. This collaboration between Autism Speaks and the NCS is sure to provide new answers to understanding the causes of autism," remarked Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., chief science officer at Autism Speaks.

Montana Becomes the 10th State to Pass Autism Insurance Reform
|
|
|
Autism Speaks joins Montana families and other autism advocacy organizations in applauding the state's legislators for passing Senate Bill 234, also known as Brandon's Bill. Brandon's Bill requires insurance companies to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies with a maximum benefit of $50,000 annually for a child with autism that is eight years old or younger and $20,000 annually for a child between the ages of nine and 18. When signed by the governor, the bill will go into effect on January 1, 2010. Passage of this law makes Montana the 10th state to pass comprehensive autism insurance reform. White House Renews Promises to Disability Community
|
|
|
Autism Speaks was among a group of non-profits invited to a special briefing on disabilities matters at the White House, on Wednesday, April 15. The meeting began with the White House declaring, “Truly it is now a new day for Americans with disabilities!”

West Texas Walk Illustrates Success of Year-Round Fundraising
|
|
On Saturday, April 4, more than 2,600 people walked in two West Texas locations, simultaneously raising over $135,000. The top two fundraising teams, "Charles in Charge" and "Haskell Heroes" successfully raised more than $40,000 through year-round events. More than 1,500 Participate in Year's First Autism SpeaksU Event
|
|
|
|
More than 1,500 people participated in the 4th annual "We Are ... Curing Autism Now" at Penn State University in State College, Penn. The event, which is organized annually by Beta Sigma Beta, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Delta Tau, has increased its four year total to more than $600,000. Three more Autism SpeaksU events are currently scheduled throughout 2009.

Holly Robinson Peete Named to Autism Speaks' Board of Directors
|

|
|
Autism Speaks announced that Holly Robinson Peete – an actress, author, autism advocate, and parent of a son, Rodney, who has autism – has been appointed to its board of directors. Robinson Peete participated in the celebration of World Autism Awareness Day in New York City on April 2, including the ringing of the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and took part in interviews with national and local media, discussing autism awareness, education and research, as well as the mission of Autism Speaks.
