Six New Autism Insurance Reform Bills Introduced
|
|
Kansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, Utah and Washington have kicked off their 2009 legislative sessions with the introduction of autism insurance reform bills, joining New Jersey, Michigan and Virginia, which currently have active bills making their way through their respective state legislatures. All nine bills are supported and endorsed by Autism Speaks, and require private insurance companies to provide coverage of medically necessary, evidence-based autism therapies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Each bill has been referred to a committee and is awaiting a hearing. Family Services Committee Requests Grant Proposals
|
|
|
Autism Speaks is again seeking proposals to fund projects that will enhance the lives of those affected by autism spectrum disorders. Proposals for these family services grants are sought in the following areas: Recreation/Community Activities; Education; Equipment/Support Technology; or Young Adult/Adult Services. Educators, trainers and services providers who work with individuals with autism are invited to apply. Applications are due by June 25, 2009. Since the inception of Autism Speaks' Family Services Community Grant program in December 2007, over $1.4 million has been awarded to more than 70 community programs across the nation.

Autism Treatment Network Announces 2008 Achievements
|
|
|
The culmination of the first 12 months of work by ATN clinicians was unveiled at the Annual Autism Treatment Network (ATN) Program Meeting, held this past December in Santa Monica, Calif. The primary aim of the meeting was to elicit comment on the draft procedures, tools and related documentation developed over the preceding year to support the establishment of consensus guidelines for the screening and treatment of autism and commonly associated conditions, including sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal complaints.

Autism Speaks Renews Support of IAN
|
|
|
In December 2008, Autism Speaks board of directors approved $2.2 million over the next two years to support the Interactive Autism Network's (IAN) continuing development. Since its inception, IAN has registered over 27,000 families, including over 10,000 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Over the next two years, IAN proposes to increase the number of its registrants, expand research-related services, enhance scientific interactions and collaboration and expand its revenue base.

Autism Speaks Kicks Off Yearlong Partnership with Thomas & Friends Live! On Stage
|
|
|
Autism Speaks announced a yearlong partnership with new musical stage show Thomas & Friends Live! On Stage: A Circus Comes to Town, where special discounted performances will be available to children with autism and their families. Many of the selected venues will feature “quiet rooms” for families who may need them. Additionally, one dollar from each ticket sold for these special performances will be donated to Autism Speaks.
