Autism Speaks Announces Over $2.4 Million in Pilot Study and Basic and Clinical Research Grants
Autism Speaks has announced a new set of grants in the categories of Pilot Study and Basic and Clinical research. The funded studies are quite diverse, ranging from clinical topics such as factors that put an adolescent with Asperger's syndrome at risk for bullying and sleep problems, to basic science such as environmental risk factors for autism and genetic studies that focus on how genes influence biochemical pathways. "All of these grants were chosen for their potential impact on quality of life of individuals with autism and the development of new treatments," notes Geri Dawson, Chief Science Officer at Autism Speaks. Ad Council and Autism Speaks Launch New PSAs Starring Toni Braxton
On Tuesday, Dec. 9 Autism Speaks and the Ad Council launched new public service announcements (PSAs) starring Grammy Award-winning recording artist Toni Braxton and her son Diezel. The PSAs juxtapose the odds of Braxton's many accomplishments with the startling odds of having a child diagnosed with autism, and urge parents to learn the early warning signs of the disorder at www.autismspeaks.org. Autism Speaks Appoints New Members to Board
Autism Speaks announced the appointment of three new members to its board of directors: Artie Kempner, lead director for the NFL and NASCAR on FOX; Billy Mann, President of International A&R - Labels and President of Global Artist Management, EMI Music; and Jack Schneider, managing director of Allen & Co. LLC. Bob Wright, chairman of the board and co-founder of Autism Speaks, announced their appointment during a recent board meeting. Read more.
PennWell Announces Partnership with Autism Speaks
Media company PennWell presented a check to Autism Speaks on December 2, 2008, representing the proceeds from a new dental course and the beginning of an ongoing relationship. This summer, they featured "Building Bridges: Dental Care for Patients with Autism" as a course in two of their dental publications, Dental Economics and RDH. The course taught highly relevant information on the signs and symptoms of autism and ways to accommodate the special needs that may be present in patients with autism. Read more.
Boston University Athletics Raises Awareness, Funds
Since 2004, Boston University's men's ice hockey team has partnered with Autism Speaks to raise awareness and funds to fight autism. The team promotes autism awareness at games and participates in the annual Greater Boston Walk Now for Autism. In addition, they hold fundraising events, autism awareness nights and garner media coverage for the cause.
