Early October Walks Raise Nearly $1.97 Million

Vegas Weekend a Sure Bet for Autism Speaks
On Oct. 11 and 12, thousands supported the inaugural Autism Speaks Weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. when the city played host to a Walk, a Ride Now event and an after party at the famous Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Read more and view photos from the Walk and the inaugural Ride.
Autism Highlighted at American Academy of Pediatrics Convention
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) held its annual national convention and exhibition in Boston from Oct. 11-14. This year's conference was attended by a record 11,000 physicians, as well as Autism Speaks Chief Science Officer Dr. Geri Dawson and VP of Scientific Affairs Dr. Andy Shih, who met with the AAP executive committee to explore ways for the two organizations to work together more closely. Symposium Examines Role of Abnormal Calcium Signaling in Autism
Many disparate clues have recently come to suggest that abnormal nerve cell calcium signaling may somehow be involved in autism. In September, with support from Autism Speaks, the Society of General Physiologists held its 62nd Annual Symposium to focus on these signaling abnormalities, with the hope that the discussions generated will foster a number of productive collaborations between traditional "calcium signaling" researchers and clinical scientists interested in autism. Autism Speaks' Family Services Releases Aging with Autism DVDs
Autism Speaks' Family Services department is proud to announce the release of a DVD series from the Aging with Autism: Defining the Future conference presented by Developmental Disabilities Institute, Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, and The Eden II Programs. "Strikeouts for Autism" Promotion Raises $25K for Autism Speaks
Frozen Ropes of Long Island, a premier baseball and softball training academy, presented a $25,000 check to Autism Speaks at Shea Stadium on Sept. 23. The donation, which was presented on the field prior to a Mets game, was based on the number of batters Mets pitchers struck out during the season. Read more.
