NASCAR Race to Benefit Student Clubs for Autism Speaks
Dover International Speedway and Best Buy officials announced this week that the June 1, 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race will be named the “Best Buy 400 benefiting Student Clubs for Autism Speaks.” A variety of initiatives, including a concert and a unique online auction, are planned for Dover's May 30 – June 1, 2008 NASCAR race weekend to increase awareness and raise funds for Autism Speaks. Final Days to "Help Chevy Help Autism"
Chevrolet has teamed up with Autism Speaks to drive home the message of autism awareness. Until the end of April – Autism Awareness Month – visit the Autism Speaks website (www.autismspeaks.org) and click on the “Help Chevy Help Autism” icon to take a virtual test drive of the 2008 North American Car of the Year – the all-new Chevy Malibu. Chevrolet has committed to a minimum contribution of $500,000, but every virtual test drive gets Chevrolet closer to its goal of donating up to $1 million to Autism Speaks. Sonoma Walk Increases Participation by 1400% in Just Three Years
In 2006, fifty eager walkers in Sonoma County raised $10,000 for Autism Speaks; on April 19, 2008 at the third annual Sonoma Walk Now for Autism, 750 walkers brought in $110,000. Eighty-one teams participated in the walk, which took place at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif., nearly 30 more than last year. Read more and view photos and video here.
Special Journal Issue Explores Oxidative Stress in Autism
In 2007 the American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (AJBB) issued a specific request for articles dedicated to the role of oxidative stress in autism. The resultant group of articles was published in a special issue last month, focused entirely on this hot topic in autism. Many of the studies selected for publication are funded by or utilize research resources made available by Autism Speaks. The collection of publications provides an important contribution to the body of literature on oxidative stress in autism spectrum disorders, and is available to the public on the AJBB web site. View Highlights from UN World Autism Awareness Day Panel
On April 2, World Autism Awareness Day, the Government of the State of Qatar, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and Autism Speaks, hosted a panel discussion on the "Global Awareness of Autism: Challenges, Responsibilities and Actions." The event featured remarks from lawmakers, experts, and families touched by autism as well as a panel discussion about the roles of the international community, non-governmental organizations, media and family in raising autism awareness.
