New Arizona Law Mandates Coverage of Autism Therapies
Autism Speaks applauds Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and the state's legislators for enacting House Bill 2847, which will require insurance carriers to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies. The new state law requires insurers to cover up to $50,000 a year for Applied Behavior Analysis therapy for children until age nine and $25,000 a year for children until age sixteen. Read more.
Autism Insurance Bill Introduced in Oklahoma
Yet another insurance reform bill has been introduced, this time in the state of Oklahoma by State Senator John Sparks (D-16) and Representative Doug Cox (R-5) that will require insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorders. SB 2118, also known as Nick's Law, will require Oklahoma healthcare policies to cover behavioral therapy and other treatments prescribed by an insured's treating physician for individuals less than age 21, and for up to $75,000 per year. The bill has already passed the Senate by a vote of 39 to 9, and is now before the House Economic Development and Financial Services Committee. "Autism: the Musical" Premieres at HBO Headquarters
In anticipation of HBO's March 25 premiere of “Autism: The Musical”, the network hosted a screening of the film at its New York City headquarters on Tuesday, March 18, at which Autism Speaks Executive Vice President of Programs and Services Peter Bell, made opening remarks. “Autism: The Musical” follows five children with autism and their families as they embark on a journey to write, rehearse and perform a musical under the guidance of The Miracle Project Founder, Elaine Hall. "Night of Too Many Stars" to Benefit Autism Speaks
Jon Stewart will host the second biannual “Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education” on April 13 at the Beacon Theater in New York, to raise money for schools and education programs for children and adults with autism, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Autism Speaks. The night will feature stand-up routines, sketches and short films by talent including Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler. Bid on One-of-a-Kind Items in the Online Auction
Autism Speaks Week in South Florida kicks off on Monday, March 24, with the opportunity to bid on rare experiences and one-of-a-kind items in the online auction. Read more here and preview the exciting offerings. Items range from walk-on roles in top-billed movies to VIP tickets to the '09 Super Bowl. Winners of the auction, which ends on March 28, will be announced during the live Telethon on Saturday evening, March 29. It's not too late to rev up your engines for the ING Direct Ride Now event, which also takes place on Saturday, March 29. Wrights Receive National Health Leadership Award
On Tuesday, March 18, Autism Speaks co-founders Suzanne and Bob Wright received the "National Health Leadership Award" from Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. during its National Physician of the Year Awards. This event recognizes outstanding contributions by physicians and healthcare leaders whose dedication has improved the lives of people around the world. Read more.
Advancing Clinical Practice Through Recognition of Autism Subtypes
Two recently published scientific articles underscore the remarkable heterogeneity of autism. This heterogeneity presents a challenge for clinicians in terms of diagnostic and treatment concerns. Comprehending and describing various subgroups of autism might be a way to advance the field of autism research and inch us closer to efficiently prescribed treatment strategies. As basic research advances our knowledge of autism, this knowledge needs to be translated into improved clinical practices – a goal facilitated by Autism Speaks programs such as the Autism Treatment Network (ATN) and the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE). CASCO Group, Reef One and PETCO Donate $15,000 to Autism Speaks

CASCO Group, Reef One and PETCO presented a $15,000 check to Autism Speaks, representing a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their biOrbs. In 2007, CASCO Group and its partner company, Reef One, announced the launch of the Autism biOrb Program and designed a special biOrb aquarium in Autism Speaks' trademark blue color. The companies then teamed up with PETCO to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of any biOrb aquarium to Autism Speaks. Upon presenting the donation, CASCO Group announced that they will continue the partnership with Autism Speaks for another year. Read more.
