Autism Speaks and Shafallah Center Form Historic Partnership
On February 13, Autism Speaks and the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs in Doha, Qatar announced a new partnership designed to increase global autism awareness and speed the pace of autism research. The agreement was formalized on Wednesday when Hassan Ali Bin Ali, chairman of the Shafallah Center, and Suzanne and Bob Wright, co-founders of Autism Speaks, signed the official partnership agreement at a press conference in New York. 2008 Walk Now for Autism Program Kicks Off in Miami
The 2008 Autism Speaks walk season opened in Miami on
February 10, with 10,000 participants walking in Key Biscayne, raising over $460,000. Nearly 350 teams participated, representing a 40% increase over 2007. Read more, view photos and watch video here.
"Hyperscanning" Study Reveals Impaired
Sense of Self in Autism
An exciting innovation for autism research was announced in a study that scanned the brains of people with autism during social interactions. The study, published in the journal Neuron, and funded in part by Autism Speaks, revealed a reduced brain signal in people with autism that might be related to their sense of self. Researchers speculate that an impaired sense of self might lead to difficulties in navigating social situations. The "hyperscanning" technique used in the study is an invaluable tool for imaging social interaction, and will lead to a better understanding of why individuals with autism struggle in social situations. IAN Reports on Occupational Therapy
According to IAN research findings, occupational therapy (including sensory integration techniques) is among the most popular interventions for children with autism. Its widespread use is likely attributable to its availability in schools and early intervention programs, as well as to the fact that it is often publicly funded. Families express high levels of satisfaction with the results of occupational therapy. Read more.
Insurance Reform Bill Introduced in Illinois State Legislature
Illinois has become the latest state to introduce autism insurance reform legislation. Illinois Senate bill 1900 was introduced this week in committee by Senator James DeLeo, and will include coverage for therapies such as applied behavioral analysis and other evidence-based, medically-necessary treatments. A lobbying day for parents and organizations in support of SB 1900 is planned for April 15 in Springfield, Ill. Read more.
"FOX Sports Supports" Campaign Revs Up
at Daytona 500
Autism Speaks has been selected as one of four charitable beneficiaries of the newly established "FOX Sports Supports" initiative, which will be unveiled at this weekend's Daytona 500 event. FOX Sports will provide in-game and/or pregame mentions of Autism Speaks, both verbal and graphic. The network also plans to produce public service announcements using FOX Sports on-air personalities designed to inform, educate and solicit support for Autism Speaks. Read more.
Bachman Bakes Edible Awareness
The Bachman Company will debut a delicious new pretzel in the shape of the Autism Speaks puzzle piece, with proceeds to benefit Autism Speaks. It will be available in mid-March in grocery stores in the Northeast and online at www.bachmanpretzels.com. Pretzels will be ready for snacking for autism awareness month in April. Read more.
