Toys"R"Us Returns as National Sponsor of
Walk Now for Autism Program
Toys"R"Us and the Toys"R"Us Children's Fund have announced their continued support of Autism Speaks. For the second consecutive year, Toys"R"Us will serve as the national sponsor of the Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism program. In addition, a nine-week, in-store fundraising campaign will take place from March 2 to May 2 in the company's 585 Toys"R"Us U.S. locations to coincide with Autism Awareness Month. Last year, the campaign raised $1.1 million. To kick off the 2008 partnership, the Toys"R"Us Children's Fund has awarded Autism Speaks a $250,000 grant. Read more.
Teletubbies Speak Out for Children with Autism
Teletubbies Tinky Winky, Dipsy, LaLa and Po encourage preschoolers to make friends with children with autism in a new PSA to air on the PBS Kids “Sprout” network in April The PSA spreads a message of awareness and acceptance. Read more and watch the PSA here.
Family Services Committee Requests Grant Proposals
Autism Speaks is once again seeking proposals for its Family Services Community Grant program to fund projects that will enhance the lives of those affected by autism spectrum disorders. Proposals for these family services grants are sought in the following areas: Education; Recreation/Community Activities; Equipment/Support Technology; and Young Adult/Adult Services. Educators, trainers and services providers who work with individuals with autism are invited to apply. In December, $565,000 was awarded to 29 community programs across the nation. Read more.
Insurance Bill Introduced in Mississippi State Legislature
Mississippi has become the latest state to introduce autism insurance reform legislation. House Bill 487 will require health insurance coverage, including coverage under the state and school employees health insurance plan, for autism spectrum disorders. Provisions of House Bill 487 will include coverage for therapies such as applied behavioral analysis and other evidence based, medically necessary treatments. Read more.
Melatonin Shows Promise for Improving Sleep Problems in Children with Autism
A new study published in the Journal of Child Neurology has found that melatonin supplements are well-tolerated and show promise for improving sleep in children with autism. Beth Malow, M.D., M.S., senior author of the study and member of Autism Speaks' Autism Treatment Network (ATN), says the potential for improved sleep and daytime behavior could have a big impact on families.
