Accelerated Head Growth Can Help Predict Autism

|
Two new studies out of the University of Washington's Autism Center, co-authored by Autism Speaks' Chief Science Officer Geraldine Dawson, say accelerated head growth can help pediatricians predict autism before behavioral symptoms start. According to the research, children later diagnosed with autism have normal-size heads at birth, but show accelerated head growth between six and nine months of age – a period which precedes the onset of many behaviors that enable physicians to diagnose the developmental disorder.

New Site Added for Clinical Trials Network Study
|

|
The Clinical Trials Network is pleased to announce the addition of a new participating center for its on-going trial, the Study of Fluoxetine in Autism (SOFIA): the Institute for Behavioral Medicine in Smyrna, Ga. The study will include more than 100 children and adolescents (ages 5-17) with autism to confirm the effectiveness of Neuropharm's custom-designed product NPL-2008, a proprietary preparation of fluoxetine, in reducing certain core symptoms of autism.

IAN Reports on Speech and Language Therapy
|
|
|
Families participating in IAN research rank "speech and language therapy" as the most utilized treatment option, citing it as relatively easy to obtain. Nearly three quarters of families report receiving speech services for "no cost". Parents who utilize speech and language therapy feel optimistic about future results. 90% expect "at least a moderate level of improvement in their child's communication and social interaction".

Insurance Bill Introduced in Arizona State Legislature
|

Arizona State Senator Amanda Aguirre introduced "Steven's Law", legislation that would disallow large group insurers from denying or refusing coverage to children who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Stars Speak Out in "Walk Now for Autism" PSAs
|
|
|
Top young stars, including "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and pop musicians, the Jonas Brothers, have recorded a series of public service announcements (PSAs) to promote Walk Now for Autism events across the country. Five for Fighting Promotion Raises Over $30,000
|

Autism Speaks is proud to be participating in a fundraising initiative hosted by the band Five For Fighting through their site WhatKindOfWorldDoYouWant.com, inspired by their song "World." As a result, we received over $30,000, thus far, due to unprecedented viewings of the videos created by individuals and families affected by autism. Read

Autism Speaks Featured in Parade Magazine

The most recent issue of the Sunday magazine Parade featured a major story on autism, "What Do We Know About Autism?" Among those interviewed for the story were Lisa Goring, Autism Speaks Director of Family Services, and her 11 year-old son, Andrew. Autism Speaks co-founder Suzanne Wright penned a sidebar story about her family's experience with autism and how it inspired the creation of the organization. Read the article
