Kickoff for a Cure III Gala Honorees Announced
|
|
|
Autism Speaks, The Gillen Brewer School and the National Football League will once again team up for the Kickoff for a Cure III dinner gala on March 12 at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in Manhattan. A group of NFL greats, past and present, will be on hand to salute the evening's honorees: Alcoa CEO Alain Belda; Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones; New York Stock Exchange Euronext CEO Duncan Niederauer; and former Jewel Companies, Inc., Chairman Donald S. Perkins. Last year's event raised more than $2 million.

Maternal Autoantibodies May Increase Autism Risk
|
|
|
A new study has found that women with certain antibodies in their blood may be at an increased risk for having children with autism. Researchers hypothesize that these antibodies may disrupt fetal brain development in utero by mistakenly targeting fetal brain tissue. The study, led by Judy Van de Water, Ph.D., at the University of California at Davis, was published in the journal Neurotoxicology, and continues to actively recruit participants for further investigation. An Autism Speaks Mentor-Based Fellowship grant has been awarded to Dr. Van de Water to support continuation of this important research.

IAN Reports on Treatment Methods Used by Parents
|

|
A new finding from the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) indicates that children who are registered in the database with autism spectrum disorder are receiving, on average, five simultaneous treatments for autism. This preliminary data on treatments was issued today by IAN, a project collecting information online from families of children with ASDs throughout the United States.

Autism Speaks Submits Testimony to Congressional Medicaid Hearing
|

Autism Speaks submitted testimony for a hearing (Helping Families with Needed Care: Medicaid's Critical Role for Americans with Disabilities) held on January 16 by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce - Subcommittee on Health, which investigated Medicaid's role in the lives of individuals with disabilities.
