Family Services Grants Awarded to Community Organizations
|
|
Autism Speaks has approved more than $565,000 in funding for 29 family services community grants. The grants will help community organizations across the country to expand existing programs and create new ones that will improve and enrich the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Grants were awarded in the areas of education, recreation/community activities, equipment/supportive technology and young adult services.

$5 Million in New Research Grants Announced
|
|
Autism Speaks has awarded just under $5 million for 40 new research grants to investigate the causes, biology, diagnosis, and treatment of autism. With the latest round of grants, the organization has now committed $30 million in science spending this year. Most of the new grants awarded in this review cycle are training grants designed to encourage new scientists to take up autism research. Two other grant types, augmentation grants and opportunity grants, expand the scope of research projects already underway by senior scientists.

Congress Approves Combating Autism Act Appropriations of $162 Million
|
|
|
Congress has passed the Fiscal 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which contains appropriations for the Combating Autism Act at the full level stipulated in the CAA, less an across the board cut of 1.747%. The President is expected to sign the bill. In total, Autism Speaks expects a 2008 fiscal appropriation of approximately $162 million to support autism research, treatment and services, as authorized by the Combating Autism Act. Read more.

Study: Scientists Report Success Treating Symptoms of Fragile X
|
|
|
A new study by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology adds evidence that therapeutics targeting a particular signaling protein may be a viable strategy for treating symptoms of Fragile X. The fact that scientists are learning how to alter brain circuits relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders can rapidly enhance our understanding of autism as well.

"Jingle Ball" Rings in Funds and Autism Awareness
|
|
Autism Speaks was the official charity of New York radio station Z-100's 11th Annual Jingle Ball concert. The sold out event took place on December 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. During the concert, Z-100's Elvis Duran and actress Hayden Panettiere presented Autism Speaks with a check for $25,000. The concert, which featured a star-studded line-up of performers including Alicia Keys, Jonas Brothers, Avril Lavigne, Backstreet Boys, Jordin Sparks, Boys Like Girls, Colbie Caillat, Timbaland (with OneRepublic & Keri Hilson), provided a great opportunity to bring our awareness message to a new young audience.
