Autism Speaks Names Dawson Chief Science Officer
Dr. Geraldine Dawson of the University of Washington has been named to the new post of Chief Science Officer at Autism Speaks. Dr. Dawson will serve as the scientific leader of Autism Speaks, working with the Scientific Affairs Committee, Scientific Advisory Board, and the science staff to expand and communicate the foundation's scientific vision and strategy. Study: Fever May Lead to Improved Behavior
Can fever lessen symptoms of autism? A new study in Pediatrics reports that improvements include increases in alertness, decreases in self-stimulatory behavior, and for some, more coherent language. The new study marks the first attempt to systematically document such a "fever effect" in children with autism. Read more.
Neurotoxicology Meeting Focuses on Oxidative Stress in Autism
The 24th Annual International Neurotoxicology Conference was held in San Antonio on November 10-14. Autism Speaks helped sponsor the event. The meeting's theme was "Environmental Etiologies of Neurological Disorders." A symposium entitled “Oxidative Stress in Autism - Cause or Consequence?” drew many attendees and explored this phenomenon, which is also implicated in Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, cancer, aging and heart disease. Children with ASDs Diagnosed With Other Disorders More Often than Siblings
New data from the Interactive Autism Network (IAN), a project collecting information online from families of children with ASDs all over the United States, show that children with ASDs are diagnosed with or treated for ADHD, anxiety, and bipolar disorder far more often than their siblings. However, unaffected brothers and sisters are diagnosed with or treated for depression about as often as children with autism. Read more.
Las Vegas Walk Marks End of Successful Walk Season
Honorary Walk Chair Toni Braxton sang the National Anthem to kick off the festivities at the Las Vegas Walk Now for Autism on Dec. 1, where over 2000 people braved windy weather to raise over $130,000 at the last Walk Now event of 2007. Guiding Light Will Promote Awareness Message

On Friday, December 14, CBS daytime drama Guiding Light will highlight the importance of learning the early warning signs of autism. Long-running character Beth Raines Bauer (played by Beth Chamberlin) and Dr. Mel Boudreau Bauer (played by Yvonna Wright) will discuss the fact that autism is the nation's fastest growing developmental disability and stress that all new mothers should familiarize themselves with the red flags for autism. Wrights, Londons Honored for Service
Last weekend, Autism Speaks Co-founders Suzanne and Bob Wright were honored at a dinner hosted by the Connecticut Center for Child Development with the Advocacy Award. Also last weekend, Autism Speaks executive board member Dr. Eric London and his wife Karen London, founders of the National Alliance for Autism Research were honored at the Fire and Ice Ball to benefit The Autism Center of New Jersey Medical School at UMDNJ. Jim Calhoun, coach of the two-time NCAA champion University of Connecticut Huskies men's basketball team, will be the featured speaker at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration's Autism Awareness Day on Sunday, December 9.
