Thousands Register for Revolutionary Autism Video Glossary
Over 60,000 people have already logged on to the new online autism video glossary, launched this week by Autism Speaks, First Signs, and Florida State University. The glossary is designed to help parents and professionals learn more about the early warning signs of autism spectrum disorders. More than one hundred side-by-side video clips illustrate typical development and behaviors that are red flags for autism, facilitating earlier diagnosis and intervention for children with autism. Large Body, Immune Disorders Linked to Autism Subset
Using subjects and data from the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE), an international research team found that a large body size—in addition to a large head—is associated with autism. This subset of people with autism was also found to have a higher incidence of immune disorders. This research takes an important step toward defining subtypes within the autism spectrum, which will help pinpoint the cause of and appropriate treatments for autism. Read more.
Star-studded Acts of Love Raises Over $150,000
The fifth annual “Acts of Love: A Celebration of Children and Those Who Love Them” raised over $150,000, attracting more than 500 guests and celebrities such as Dermot Mulroney, James Franco, and Wendie Malick, who performed readings for the audience. Former Olympian Todd Eldredge to Appear at DC Walk
World famous figure skater Todd Eldredge will join walkers at the Washington, DC Walk Now for Autism this Saturday, October 20. Eldredge will announce that he will perform alongside Olympic gold medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Brian Boitano in
The Music of Seal on Ice,'' an event benefiting Autism Speaks on December 18. Advance tickets can be purchased via presale (password: ROSE) until 10 p.m., October 26. Walks are also being held this weekend in Baltimore, Md . and Central N.J.
Chicago Marathoner Raises $100,000 for Autism Speaks
Brian Callaci, a Chicago-area father of three (including one child who is on the autism spectrum), raised $100,000 for Autism Speaks, running in the Chicago Marathon. By soliciting donations from more than two hundred and fifty friends and family members, he far exceeded his initial goal of raising $15,000. Read more and watch video.
Autism Speaks Featured Volunteer: Steve White
For nine and a half years, Steve White has volunteered weekly at the Autism Speaks Los Angeles office - filing, photocopying, and creating countless parent packets, press kits, and sponsorship packets. As an adult with autism, Steve feels that he has a personal stake in helping families until a cure is found.
